Home Remedies for Acne Scars

April 15th, 2008 · No Comments

When you have acne and want to get rid of it as quickly as possible you will listen to all sorts of advice and opinions. This can range from how to wash your face, what foods to eat and what to do with sudden break outs of pimples. Much advice is spot on. For instance, you shouldn’t pop pimples. However, eating chocolate bars won’t make your acne worse despite what you may have been told.

Both of these beliefs do not stand up to rigorous analysis. In fact, the idea of squeezing pimples might feel like a solution to the problem but it may actually do more harm than good. It may spread the infection and lead to permanent scarring. Also, chocolate and many other foods that you may have been warned off, like French fries, do not contribute to acne.

There are a few medical procedures that can treat acne scarring. Common methods are laser resurfacing and dermabrasion. Many people shy away from these types of procedure mainly because they are expensive but they can also put unnecessary stress on the skin. There are a number of holistic and herbal remedies for acne scarring. This article will list some less-invasive home remedies for acne scars and explain how to care for your skin at home.

Common Home Remedies for Acne Scars

Acne scars form due to trauma to the skin either from moderate to severe forms of acne or from picking or squeezing pimples. The most common acne scars are brown or red discolorations left behind after a pimple heals. These spots will often lighten on their own in two to 12 months but can be helped along by skin lightening and scar removal creams made from common household ingredients.

A good way to begin any skin care regimen is with a clean face that has a balanced ph. To obtain a balanced ph, apply a paste of baking soda and water to the skin for 15 minutes several times a week. Once the skin is balanced, topical application of other products can begin. One good scar lightening mixture is a cucumber and tomato mask placed on the face for 20 to 30 minutes.

Another is a mask of lemon juice and plain yogurt. For skin that is not too sensitive, 100 per cent lemon juice can be applied and either left on overnight or left on under makeup in the morning. Lemon juice is thought to remove pigmentation scars twice as fast as any other remedy.

Drinking water is a good way to look after the skin because it allows toxins to be flushed out of the body naturally and not through the pores of the skin. Topical applications of tea tree oil, aloe vera gel, vitamin E, vitamin A, and zinc are all excellent home remedies for acne scars.

However the best home remedy for acne scars is prevention. Avoid picking at pimples despite the obvious temptation. Leaving mild acne pimples alone will allow them to heal without leaving scars. Applying topical ointments can speed up this healing process.

Unfortunately deep, pitted scars will take a long time to heal just like any other kind of scar from a wound or operation. In this case surgical intervention may be your best bet. Things like dermabrasion or collagen implants can fill the scar but, again, they will be an expensive option.
